5 Card Stud Poker is one of the earliest variants of the stud poker, which originates from the times of the American Civil War. 5 Card Stud Poker is now less popular than many other poker variants, but it is still played in many casinos and online poker rooms across the world. For example, 5 Card Stud Poker is especially popular in Finland, where this poker variant is played in all casinos and poker rooms.
5 Card Stud Poker is usually played fixed-limit or spread-limit (where higher limits are reached in the later betting rounds), though no-limit and pot-limit structures are also possible. It is also typical to use either small ante, or bring-in in 5 Card Stud Poker.
The play
5 Card Stud Poker play begins with each player being dealt two cards: one card is dealt facedown and the second card is dealt face-up. If the game is played with a bring-in, then a player with the lowest open card should pay the bring-in before the betting goes on. If there are two or more players holding equally ranked low open cards, then suit ranks may be considered to break the tie. In case if the game is played without bring-in, then betting starts with the player holding the highest-ranked open card. This player may check. If there are two or more players holding equally ranked high cards, then suit ranks shouldn’t be used to break ties. In this case the game starts with the first player to the left from the dealer holding the highest ranked open card.
Between the first and the second betting rounds another card is dealt to each player face-up. Usually this second open card is headed by a burn card starting with the player sitting to the left from the dealer button, as with all subsequent betting rounds. At this point betting begins with the player holding the best poker hand formed by his open cards. During this and all subsequent betting rounds, the first acting player can opt to check or bet up to the predefined game’s limit. After the second betting round ends, each player is dealt third open card and third betting round starts with the player holding the strongest poker hand formed by his open cards. The fourth open card is dealt before the fourth (and the last) betting round followed by a showdown.
Example of a 5 Card Stud Poker game:
Say there are four players. Ann, who is dealing, Bill, who is sitting to her left, Jane, who is sitting to his left and Alfred sitting to Jane’s left. Each player is dealt with one card face down followed by one card face up starting with Bill and ending with Ann. Bill gets 4, Jane gets Q, Alfred also got 4 and Ann has 9. Since they’ve agreed to play with a $1 bring-in, Alfred has to pay $1 bring-in since his 4 is lower than Bill’s 4 by suit. He can opt to open the betting for more, but he only chooses to bet the required $1. The bring-in sets the current betting limit to $1, so Ann cannot check. Ann decides to call and Bill folds. Then Jane raises to $3, Alfred folds and Ann calls. Ann now deals the second open card to all players still staying in the pot. Jane gets J and Ann gets Q. Since Ann now holds Q-9 and Jane has Q-J, then its Jane’s turn to bet. She checks and Ann checks too ending the betting round. Next two open cards are dealt to both Ann and Jane – Jane gets 3 and Ann gets Q. Ann now holds a pair of Q and Jane still has no pair, so Ann bets first. Ann bets $5 and Jane calls. Before the fourth betting round, the final two open cards are dealt to Ann and Jane. Jane gets A and Ann gets 4. Jane still has no pair, thus Ann bets first again. Ann bets $5 and is raised to $10 by Jane. Ann calls and now both Ann and Jane must enter the showdown. Since Jane was the last player taking aggressive action, she shows first. Her pocket card is A, thus her best poker hand is a pair of A. Since Ann is the last to act, she is allowed to muck her cards and she chooses to do so. Thus the pot of $22 goes to Jane.
